It is not my usual practice to post-process my photos much at all (unless I'm specifically trying to achive a modified-image look), but I did adjust this one a bit, to increase the contrast... On the hazy day, it all kinda blended together. I'm not entirely convinced this version is actually better; it's different, and in ways I like it better and in ways I like it worse. I think I need to take a class in (or otherwise study up on) digital color correction and such, so that I can try to actually do something sane with this, instead of just taking random stabs at it in xv or the gimp. (It might also help if I just spent a bit more time playing with it... perhaps I'll do that later, but for now, here it is.)

The photo for Saturday, August 13th, 2005: Polaris and friends:

Polaris and friends

Alas, there's a bit of a haze in this shot. I'm not 100% sure if that was from the clouds that were drifting in at the time, or if it was lens flare from one of the cars that was occasionally passing by -- both were a problem last night (and I even darkened the image some from its original form). But I've got a Timer/Remote for my Canon 10D now, so I'm sure to try for more star pictures at some point, now that I have a good way of controlling the exposures for them. Anyway, you can see the effects of the rotation of the earth going on here, with the axis center star of Polaris in the frame.

The entry for Tuesday January 25th: a colorful Lady Gouldian's finch (I only wish digital could capture the colors as well as real life. I may have to shoot this bird again using velvia, and hope for a good scan):
